Collectible card game

A card game in which players build decks from cards acquired through randomized or otherwise variable distribution, often collecting and trading cards over time.

Deck-building game: A card game in which players usually construct a deck during play from a shared or personal pool. Unlike collectible card games, its defining deck is typically assembled during each game.
Magic: The Gathering: A fantasy collectible card game first published by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. It established the commercial format that later games adapted.
Constructed format: A tournament format in which players bring decks built from their own eligible collections. It is the clearest competitive expression of long-term deck construction.
Living card game: A card game sold through fixed, nonrandomized expansions rather than randomized booster packs. Its fixed distribution removes the randomized acquisition common in collectible card games.
Mana: A resource used in some games to pay for playing cards or activating abilities. Magic: The Gathering made resource costs a defining part of many collectible card games.
Richard Garfield: An American mathematician and game designer who created Magic: The Gathering. His design joined customizable decks with separately sold cards.
Draft (card game): A card-game format in which players select cards from passing groups to build decks. Draft turns randomized packs into a shared, skill-based deck-building competition.
Expandable card game: A card game with regular new card releases, often distributed in fixed sets rather than randomized packs. It expands card choices without relying on collectible rarity and random pack contents.
Metagame: The evolving landscape of strategies and choices shaped by a game's rules, players, and competitive environment. Decks adapt to the strategies that opponents are expected to bring.
Wizards of the Coast: An American game publisher known for Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. The publisher developed and marketed the first major collectible card game.
