Knowra Collective identity Collective identity Collective identity is a shared sense of belonging through which people understand themselves as members of a group and distinguish that group from others.
Social identity theory : A theory explaining how group membership shapes self-concept, intergroup comparison, and behavior. It models how belonging to a group becomes part of a person’s self-understanding.
Social group : A set of people connected by interaction, shared characteristics, or a recognized sense of membership. Collective identity is the shared self-understanding attached to a social group.
Social movement : A sustained collective effort to promote or resist social change. Movements use shared identities to build solidarity and coordinate action.
Personal identity : The traits, memories, values, and commitments through which a person understands themselves as an individual. It foregrounds individual self-understanding rather than a shared group membership.
In-group and out-group : An in-group is a group someone identifies with; an out-group is one they see as distinct from it. Collective identity takes shape partly by marking who belongs and who does not.
Belongingness : The felt experience of being accepted, included, and connected to others. Belonging is the personal experience that a group identity can express.
Nationalism : A political principle and movement that treats the nation as a central community of allegiance. National identity can unite people around a shared political community.
Role identity : A self-understanding tied to a social position and its associated expectations. A role defines expected conduct, while collective identity emphasizes shared group belonging.
Social categorization : The process of sorting people, including oneself, into social groups. Categorizing people makes group boundaries and shared membership cognitively salient.
Social norms : Shared expectations about appropriate conduct within a group or society. Common norms signal membership and help sustain a group’s distinctive character.
