Collective improvisation

Collective improvisation is music made spontaneously by a group whose members shape the ensemble sound together rather than follow a fixed solo order.

Call and response: A musical exchange in which one performer or group answers another with a related phrase. Improvisers use musical questions and answers to make spontaneous exchanges legible.
New Orleans jazz: An early jazz tradition associated with New Orleans, featuring ensemble playing, syncopation, and improvisation. Its polyphonic ensemble texture is an early model of several simultaneous improvising lines.
Ornette Coleman: An American jazz saxophonist and composer who helped develop free jazz in the late 1950s. His groups explored improvisation without requiring every solo to follow fixed chord changes.
Counterpoint: The combination of independent melodic lines sounding together. Collective improvisers can create interlocking lines instead of placing one solo above accompaniment.
Solo improvisation: Spontaneous music created primarily by one performer rather than an interacting ensemble. It concentrates musical decision-making in one performer instead of distributing it across the group.
Musical interaction: The ways performers influence one another’s timing, phrasing, dynamics, and musical choices. Collective improvisation depends on each player adjusting to the ensemble in real time.
Dixieland: A jazz style built around collective ensemble passages, often with improvised counterpoint among horns. Dixieland made interweaving group improvisation a recognizable feature of jazz performance.
Don Cherry: An American jazz trumpeter known for work with Ornette Coleman and for later cross-cultural collaborations. His compact, responsive playing helped Coleman’s ensembles build music through interaction.
Polyrhythm: The simultaneous use of distinct rhythmic patterns or meters. Independent rhythmic layers let players contribute different pulses to a shared texture.
Jazz combo: A small jazz ensemble, commonly featuring a solo instrument with rhythm-section accompaniment. Many combos preserve a lead-and-accompaniment arrangement even when the lead improvises.
