Collectivization in the Soviet Union

Collectivization in the Soviet Union was the forced consolidation of private farms into collective and state farms, begun at scale in the late 1920s. It transformed rural production through state control, coercion, and mass upheaval.

Kolkhoz: A Soviet collective farm in which households pooled land and equipment under state-directed production. Collective farms became the principal institutional form imposed on Soviet peasants.
Soviet famine of 1930–1933: A severe famine across parts of the Soviet Union during 1930–1933, caused by policy failures, coercive procurement, and other factors. Collectivization and grain seizures contributed to the famine’s devastating toll.
War Communism: The Bolshevik economic policies of 1918–1921, including nationalization and compulsory grain requisitioning during the Russian Civil War. Its grain seizures foreshadowed later coercive methods, though collectivization was a distinct policy.
