Collectivization

Collectivization consolidates individually operated farms or enterprises into collectively controlled units, often through state direction. It changes ownership and production decisions from individual control to collective organization.

Collective farming: Agricultural production organized around shared land, resources, or decisions rather than independent family farms. It is the principal form collectivization takes in agriculture.
Collectivization in the Soviet Union: The Soviet campaign, begun in the late 1920s, to consolidate peasant farms into collective and state farms. It is the best-known state-directed campaign of agricultural collectivization.
Marxism–Leninism: A communist political doctrine that combines Marxist class analysis with Leninist ideas about party leadership and revolution. Its arguments about class and socialized production shaped communist collectivization policies.
Holodomor: The famine in Soviet Ukraine in 1932–1933, during which millions of people died. Collectivization and grain procurement contributed to the conditions of this catastrophic famine.
Private property: A system in which individuals or organizations hold legally recognized rights to own and control assets. It contrasts with collective control over land and productive resources.
State ownership: Ownership of property or productive assets by a government. Governments often took control of land and assets while organizing farms collectively.
Great Leap Forward: A Chinese campaign from 1958 to 1962 to accelerate industrialization and transform agriculture through communes and mass mobilization. People’s communes made collectivization central to this campaign.
War communism: The Soviet economic policies of 1918–1921, including grain requisitioning and state control during the Russian Civil War. Its coercive grain policies foreshadowed later state interventions in peasant agriculture.
Soviet famine of 1932–1933: A famine across parts of the Soviet Union in 1932–1933 that killed millions of people. It shows the lethal interaction of collectivization, procurement, and state policy.
State farm: An agricultural enterprise owned and managed by the state, typically with workers paid as employees. State farms differed from collectives in ownership and the status of farm workers.
