Colonial Brazil

Colonial Brazil was the Portuguese colony in South America established after Portugal claimed the territory in 1500. It ended with Brazil’s independence in 1822.

Hereditary captaincies: Portuguese grants that divided Brazil’s coast into hereditary territories administered by private captains. These grants were Portugal’s first major attempt to govern and settle its Brazilian claim.
Slavery in Brazil: The legal ownership and forced labor of enslaved people in Brazil, abolished in 1888. Portuguese rule made Brazil the largest destination for enslaved Africans in the Americas.
Treaty of Tordesillas: The 1494 agreement dividing newly claimed lands outside Europe between Portugal and Spain. Its boundary helped Portugal justify its claim to much of eastern South America.
Tomé de Sousa: The first governor-general of Portuguese America, appointed in 1549 to establish centralized rule. He founded Salvador as the seat of the new general government.
Pernambuco revolt: A 1645–1654 uprising that expelled Dutch forces from Portuguese Brazil’s northeastern sugar region. The revolt restored Portuguese control after the Dutch occupation of Pernambuco.
General Government of Brazil: A centralized Portuguese administration established in Brazil in 1549, based in Salvador. It supplemented the captaincies with a royal government and coordinated colonial defense.
Brazilian Portuguese: The variety of Portuguese spoken in Brazil, shaped by regional histories and contact among languages. Colonial settlement and language contact established Portuguese as Brazil’s dominant language.
Pedro Álvares Cabral: The Portuguese commander whose fleet reached the Brazilian coast in 1500 during a voyage to India. His arrival became the conventional starting point of Portuguese colonial history in Brazil.
Zumbi dos Palmares: A leader of Palmares who resisted Portuguese attacks on the maroon community in seventeenth-century Brazil. His resistance represents the struggle against colonial slavery and military repression.
Beckman revolt: A 1684 revolt in Maranhão against the Portuguese trading company and colonial authorities. It exposed conflicts over trade monopolies and access to enslaved labor.
