Color gamut

A color gamut is the range of colors a device or color space can represent. Its boundaries depend on the color model, primaries, and operating conditions.

CIE 1931 color space: A mathematical model of human color matching that maps visible colors into three numerical coordinates. Its chromaticity diagram provides a standard backdrop for plotting and comparing gamuts.
sRGB: A standard RGB color space designed for consistent color on displays and across the web. Its relatively compact gamut became the common baseline for web images and displays.
Color volume: The three-dimensional range of colors a display can produce across hue, saturation, and brightness. Unlike a two-dimensional gamut diagram, color volume also captures brightness-dependent limits.
Color management: The control of color representations across devices using profiles and defined workflows. It coordinates differing device gamuts to preserve intended image appearance.
RGB color model: A color model that represents colors as combinations of red, green, and blue components. An RGB system's chosen primaries bound its reproducible chromaticities.
Display P3: A wide-gamut RGB color space using P3 primaries and a D65 white point. It represents more saturated reds and greens than sRGB on compatible displays.
Color accuracy: The closeness of reproduced colors to specified or intended colors. A large gamut does not guarantee accurate reproduction of colors within it.
Chromatic adaptation: The visual system's adjustment to changes in the color of illumination. Viewing conditions alter perceived colors, complicating comparisons between gamut specifications.
Color space: A defined system for representing colors with coordinates and rules for interpreting them. A gamut is the subset of colors representable within a particular color space.
Adobe RGB color space: An RGB color space designed to encompass much of the colors available in CMYK printing. Its expanded green coverage suits photographic editing for print workflows.
