Color mixing

Color mixing combines colored lights, pigments, or other color stimuli to produce a new perceived color. The result depends on the medium and viewing conditions.

Additive color: A method of producing colors by combining light of different wavelengths or color channels. Overlapping colored lights combine by adding their emitted light.
Visible spectrum: The range of electromagnetic wavelengths detectable by the human visual system. Mixtures of visible wavelengths provide one physical route to perceived colors.
RGB color model: An additive color model that represents colors with red, green, and blue components. Screens use its channel combinations to create a broad range of colors.
Color blending: The gradual transition between colors in an image or visual field. Blending creates transitions, whereas mixing combines stimuli or materials into a resulting color.
Subtractive color: A method of producing colors by filtering or absorbing parts of illuminating light. Pigments and filters remove portions of the light reaching the eye.
Trichromacy: Color vision based on three classes of cone photoreceptors with different spectral sensitivities. Three cone responses underlie many three-primary mixing systems.
CMYK color model: A subtractive color model using cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks for printing. Its inks filter reflected light to reproduce colors on paper.
Optical mixing: The perceptual fusion of nearby colors that remain physically separate. It resembles material mixing but occurs through viewing rather than blending substances.
Color matching functions: Mathematical functions describing how amounts of three primaries match colors for a standard observer. They quantify how mixtures of chosen lights can match perceived colors.
Color space: A model that assigns coordinates to colors according to specified dimensions or primaries. It provides a framework for describing mixture results quantitatively.
