Combat air patrol

A military aircraft patrol positioned to detect and engage hostile aircraft before they attack a protected area. Its location and timing are set to protect forces, installations, or airspace.

Airborne early warning and control: A system that uses aircraft-mounted sensors and controllers to detect and coordinate responses to airborne threats. Its radar and controllers can cue combat air patrols toward approaching aircraft.
Fleet defense: The protection of naval forces from threats, including aircraft, missiles, submarines, and surface vessels. Carrier-based patrols extend a fleet’s defense against hostile aircraft.
World War I: A global war fought from 1914 to 1918, marked by extensive trench warfare and the first large-scale use of military aircraft. Fighter patrols emerged as aircraft began contesting control of the skies.
Combat air patrol station: A designated area or orbit where aircraft maintain a patrol to protect a specified force or location. A station is the defined position held during a patrol, not the entire mission.
Air interception: The process of identifying, approaching, and potentially engaging an aircraft in flight. It is the immediate tactical action a patrol takes against a detected threat.

Escort fighter: A fighter assigned to accompany and protect another aircraft or formation during a mission. An escort stays with a protected formation, while a patrol guards an area or force.
Air-to-air missile: A guided missile launched from an aircraft to destroy another aircraft. It gives patrol fighters a principal means of engaging hostile aircraft beyond gun range.
Ground-controlled interception: A method in which ground radar controllers direct fighters toward airborne targets. It can guide patrol aircraft to threats detected by ground-based radar.
