Combination lock

A combination lock secures an enclosure or object and opens when its mechanism is set to a prescribed sequence of numbers or symbols rather than operated with a key.

Locking mechanism: An arrangement of parts that prevents or permits movement to control access. A combination lock is one mechanism for blocking a bolt until its components align.
Lock and key: A security arrangement in which a lock opens when a matching physical key moves its internal mechanism. It uses a physical credential where a combination lock uses an entered sequence.
Safe deposit box: A secured compartment in a bank vault, rented to store valuables and documents. Combination mechanisms have been used in locks controlling access to such compartments.
Electronic lock: A lock whose release is controlled by an electronic circuit responding to an authorized credential or command. It can replace mechanical wheels with electronic code checking and actuators.
Combination wheel: A rotating disk inside some combination locks, with a notch that can align with a fence. Each wheel stores one part of the entered combination through its rotational position.
Padlock: A portable lock with a shackle that can secure items without being built into a door. Combination locks commonly appear in the padlock form.
Gym locker: A personal storage compartment in a shared facility, commonly secured with a small lock. Combination padlocks let users secure lockers without carrying a key.
Keypad lock: A lock operated by entering a code on a set of physical or touch-sensitive buttons. It accepts a memorized code like a combination lock but uses a keypad interface.
Fence (lock mechanism): A movable bar or lever that engages wheel notches or gates to release a lock's bolt. The fence detects whether the internal wheel gates have aligned.
Pin tumbler lock: A cylinder lock whose pins must align at a shear line, usually when turned by a correctly cut key. Its pin alignment contrasts with the rotating wheels or disks of many combination locks.
