Comic book

A publication that tells stories or presents information through sequential images, usually combining illustrations with captions and dialogue. Its panels arrange images and words into a sequence.

Panel (comics): A bounded image or image area representing a moment in a comic. Panels divide a comic’s action into distinct visual beats.
Sequential art: A form of visual storytelling that uses ordered images to convey events or ideas. Comic books are one prominent form of sequential art.
The Yellow Kid: A comic-strip character created by Richard F. Outcault and published in American newspapers in the 1890s. The character’s newspaper success helped establish the commercial appeal of comics.
Superhero fiction: Fiction centered on protagonists with extraordinary abilities, identities, or missions to protect others. Superhero fiction became the most commercially prominent comic-book genre in the United States.

Gutter (comics): The space between panels in a comic page or strip. Readers infer events that occur between the panels.
Closure (comics): The mental process of inferring a continuous event from separate comic panels. Closure lets readers connect panel images into a continuous action.
Funnies on Parade: A 1933 American publication that reprinted newspaper comic strips in a magazine-sized format. Its format helped lead to the regular American comic-book publication.
Manga: Comics and graphic novels produced in Japan or in a style associated with Japanese comics. Manga shows a distinct publishing tradition with its own genres and conventions.
Seduction of the Innocent: A 1954 book by psychiatrist Fredric Wertham arguing that comic books harmed young readers. The book helped intensify public pressure for comic-book censorship.
