Commander Islands

The Commander Islands are a Russian archipelago in the Bering Sea, east of the Kamchatka Peninsula. The group includes Bering Island, Medny Island, and several smaller islands.

Bering Island: The largest Commander Island, situated at the eastern edge of the archipelago. Its settlement and coastal landscapes anchor most accounts of life in the group.
Vitus Bering: A Danish-born explorer who led Russian expeditions across the North Pacific. His shipwreck on Bering Island in 1741 gave the archipelago its European historical point of entry.
Northern fur seal: A migratory eared seal that breeds in large colonies across the North Pacific. Its breeding colonies are a defining feature of the Commander Islands’ coast.
Kamchatka Peninsula: A peninsula in Russia’s Far East extending south into the North Pacific. The Commander Islands lie east of Kamchatka, across the western Bering Sea.
Steller's sea cow extinction: The disappearance of Steller’s sea cow after intensive hunting began in the eighteenth century. Hunting around Bering Island made the archipelago central to the species’ rapid extinction.
Medny Island: An island in the western Commander Islands, separated from Bering Island by the Admiral Kuznetsov Strait. Its remote terrain and former settlement show the archipelago beyond Bering Island.
Second Kamchatka Expedition: An extensive Russian imperial exploration project of Siberia and the North Pacific in the eighteenth century. Bering’s voyage to the islands formed part of this larger expedition.
Steller sea lion: A large eared seal native to the North Pacific. The islands’ shorelines provide important habitat for this marine mammal.
Aleutian Islands: A volcanic island arc stretching west from Alaska toward Russia. They share North Pacific marine ecosystems and Indigenous history with the Commander Islands.
Fur trade: The commercial exchange of animal pelts, historically involving extensive trapping and hunting. Fur extraction reshaped the islands’ population and wildlife under Russian rule.
