Committee of Public Safety

A governing committee established by the National Convention in 1793 to direct France’s war effort and internal security. It became the central executive authority during the Reign of Terror.

National Convention: The elected assembly that governed France from 1792 to 1795 during the French Revolution. The Convention created the committee and formally retained authority over it.
French Revolutionary Wars: A series of conflicts beginning in 1792 between revolutionary France and European powers, later joined by internal uprisings. Military emergencies prompted the Convention to establish a stronger executive body.

Representatives on mission: Convention deputies sent to French departments and armies to enforce revolutionary policies and report conditions. The committee relied on these deputies to supervise the provinces and military forces.
Vendée uprising: A counterrevolutionary revolt that began in western France in 1793 and developed into a brutal civil war. The uprising intensified the Convention’s demands for centralized internal security.
