Commodity exchange

A regulated marketplace where participants trade standardized contracts tied to physical commodities or financial benchmarks. It supports price discovery, hedging, and speculation through futures, options, and related instruments.

Futures contract: A standardized agreement to buy or sell an asset at a specified price on a future date. Futures are the central contracts traded on many commodity exchanges.
Hedging: A strategy that offsets exposure to potential losses by taking a related position. Producers and consumers use exchange contracts to reduce uncertainty about future input or sale prices.

Spot market: A market for transactions settled for prompt delivery at the prevailing price. Spot trading centers on near-term exchange of goods, not primarily standardized future obligations.
Commodity price volatility: The degree to which commodity prices fluctuate over time. Exchange trading can reveal and transmit changing expectations about supply and demand.
