Commonwealth of England

The republican government established after the English monarchy was abolished in 1649. It ruled England, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland until the monarchy was restored in 1660.

Rump Parliament: The reduced House of Commons that governed England after the purge of MPs in December 1648. It became the Commonwealth’s first governing authority after Charles I’s execution.
English Civil War: A series of armed conflicts between Parliamentarians and Royalists in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland from 1642 to 1651. Its military and political upheavals made the abolition of the monarchy possible.
John Bradshaw: An English judge who presided over the trial of Charles I and served as president of the Council of State. He represented the legal and executive authority of the new republic.
Cromwellian conquest of Ireland: The Parliamentarian reconquest of Ireland from 1649 to 1653, marked by warfare, confiscations, and forced population transfers. The republic’s rule in Ireland brought lasting dispossession and political trauma.
Council of State: An executive body established by Parliament to administer the English republic. It carried out government between parliamentary sessions and directed foreign affairs.
Pride's Purge: The 1648 removal of members of the Long Parliament who opposed trying Charles I. It left the Rump Parliament able to proceed with the king’s trial.
Thomas Fairfax: The Parliamentarian general who commanded the New Model Army during the first English Civil War. His military leadership helped establish Parliament’s supremacy before the Commonwealth began.
Cromwellian conquest of Scotland: The English campaign that occupied Scotland after its support for Charles II in 1650. The Commonwealth extended English republican rule over Scotland by force.
Instrument of Government: England’s 1653 written constitution, which defined powers for a lord protector, council, and parliament. It created the constitutional framework for the Protectorate within the Commonwealth period.
Trial of Charles I: The 1649 treason trial of Charles I before a specially constituted High Court of Justice. The trial supplied the immediate political prelude to the republic.
