Commonwealth of Independent States

The Commonwealth of Independent States is a regional organization established in 1991 by former Soviet republics to coordinate cooperation while preserving their sovereignty.

Dissolution of the Soviet Union: The 1991 end of the Soviet Union as a sovereign state and the emergence of independent republics. The Soviet Union's breakup created the new states that negotiated the CIS.
