Commonwealth of Nations

The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary association of 56 independent countries, most formerly part of the British Empire, that cooperate on shared political and cultural aims.

Balfour Declaration of 1926: A statement defining Britain and its self-governing Dominions as equal members of the British Empire. It articulated the principle of equality that later shaped the Commonwealth’s independent membership.
Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting: A biennial gathering of Commonwealth member governments’ leaders. It is the association’s main forum for setting political priorities collectively.
Organisation internationale de la Francophonie: An international organization of French-speaking states and governments that promotes cooperation and the French language. It is a linguistic association with a different colonial history and institutional membership.
Harare Commonwealth Declaration: A 1991 declaration affirming democracy, human rights, and the rule of law as Commonwealth principles. It made political values a clearer basis for the association’s public purpose.
Reparations for slavery: Proposals to address the lasting harms of enslavement through compensation or other forms of redress. Caribbean members have pressed for reparative justice in debates involving Britain and the wider association.
Statute of Westminster 1931: A British law recognizing the legislative independence of the Dominions. It gave legal form to the autonomy behind the Commonwealth’s evolving relationship.
Commonwealth Secretariat: The intergovernmental organization that supports Commonwealth cooperation and administers its programs. It coordinates initiatives while leaving policy authority with member governments.
European Union: A political and economic union of European states with shared institutions and binding law. Unlike the Commonwealth, it can make certain rules legally binding on its members.
South Africa and the Commonwealth: South Africa’s changing membership in the Commonwealth amid apartheid and its end. Its withdrawal and later return show how membership could intersect with opposition to apartheid.
Caribbean Community: A regional organization promoting economic integration and cooperation among Caribbean countries. Its members coordinate regional positions, including calls for reparations within Commonwealth discussions.
