Communication (biology)

Communication in biology is the transmission of signals between organisms or cells that influences their behavior or activity. Signals can be chemical, physical, or electrical.

Signal transduction: The conversion of a detected signal into a series of molecular events that changes cell activity. It explains how a cell turns an incoming message into a response.
Signal (biology): A detectable cue that can alter the activity or behavior of a biological receiver. A signal is the information-bearing element at the center of biological communication.
Quorum sensing: A process in which microorganisms coordinate gene expression according to the local population density. Bacteria use released chemicals to coordinate group behaviors such as biofilm formation.
Biological interaction: An effect of one organism or biological entity on another, including cooperative and harmful relationships. Not every interaction involves a transmitted signal that changes a receiver's activity.
Evolutionary game theory: The study of how strategic interactions shape the evolution of traits in populations. It models how signaling strategies persist when senders and receivers have competing interests.
Chemical signaling: Communication through molecules released by one cell or organism and detected by another. Many biological messages travel as molecules through air, water, or tissue.
Sender–receiver model: A framework describing communication in terms of a signal-producing sender and a signal-interpreting receiver. It separates signal production from the response that gives a signal biological effect.
Pollination syndrome: A set of flower traits associated with attracting particular groups of pollinators. Flower colors, scents, and shapes function as signals that guide pollinator behavior.
Chemical ecology: The study of chemical interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment. It includes chemical effects that may not function as communication signals.
Handicap principle: The hypothesis that costly signals can remain reliable because only certain senders can afford to produce them. It offers one explanation for how signals stay informative despite conflicts of interest.
