Community of Madrid

An autonomous community in central Spain that includes Madrid city and surrounding municipalities. Its regional government exercises powers devolved by Spain’s constitution and laws.

Madrid: The capital of Spain and the largest municipality in the Community of Madrid. The autonomous community takes its name from this city, which lies within its territory.
Spanish transition to democracy: Spain’s shift from dictatorship to parliamentary democracy following Francisco Franco’s death in 1975. The democratic transition created the constitutional framework for regional autonomy.
Madrid Metro: The rapid-transit system serving Madrid city and several surrounding municipalities. Regional institutions have a central role in coordinating the metro network.
