Commuting

Commuting is regular travel between a person’s home and a workplace or school. It connects daily routines to transport systems, land use, and access to jobs and education.

Commuter rail: Passenger rail service designed mainly for regular travel between suburbs and urban centers. It carries large numbers of commuters along fixed corridors, often during peak hours.
Commuter town: A settlement whose residents commonly travel elsewhere for work rather than working locally. Its daily life and transport demand are organized around outbound and return journeys.
Induced demand: The increase in travel that follows an expansion of transport capacity or a reduction in its cost. New road capacity may attract additional commute trips and erode congestion relief.
Business travel: Travel undertaken for work purposes, often to meetings, clients, or temporary work sites. It is work-related travel, but unlike commuting it usually does not repeat between home and a regular workplace.
Bus rapid transit: A bus-based public transport system using measures such as dedicated lanes and rapid boarding to increase speed and capacity. Dedicated lanes and frequent service can make bus commutes more predictable.
Commuting zone: A geographic area linked to an employment center by substantial flows of workers. It maps the reach of a city’s jobs through routine travel.
Transport poverty: Limited ability to access essential destinations because transport is unavailable, unaffordable, or unsuitable. Long or costly commutes can restrict access to jobs and education.
School run: A journey made to take a child to or collect them from school. It is a regular school-related trip, but may involve a caregiver’s separate journey rather than the student’s commute.
Park and ride: A transport facility where people park private vehicles and continue their journeys by public transport or carpool. It links car-dependent areas to transit routes for the remaining commute.
Transit-oriented development: Compact, mixed-use development centered on high-quality public transport. Placing homes and jobs near transit can shorten car-dependent commutes.
