Comoé National Park

Comoé National Park is a protected area in northeastern Ivory Coast, where the Comoé River runs through a mosaic of savanna, woodland, and forest.

Comoé River: A major West African river that flows north to south through northeastern Ivory Coast before entering Ghana. The river forms the park’s ecological spine, supporting habitats along its banks.
UNESCO World Heritage Site: A place inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List for its recognized cultural or natural value. Comoé received natural World Heritage status for its exceptional ecological diversity.
Wildlife poaching: The illegal killing or capture of wild animals, often for meat or commercial trade. Poaching contributed to severe wildlife declines in the park before conservation efforts intensified.
African elephant: The largest living land animal, found in sub-Saharan Africa and comprising forest and savanna species. Elephants are among the park’s most prominent large mammals and a focus of conservation work.
Sudanian savanna: A tropical grassland and woodland belt spanning parts of West and Central Africa. Much of the park lies within this savanna region, whose seasonal climate shapes its vegetation.
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve: A protected area recognized by UNESCO for combining biodiversity conservation with sustainable development and research. The designation links conservation in Comoé with research and sustainable use around the park.
Ivorian Civil War: A conflict in Ivory Coast that began in 2002 and divided the country into government- and rebel-controlled areas. The conflict disrupted park management and contributed to Comoé’s temporary loss of World Heritage status.
African savanna buffalo: A large, herd-forming bovine native to sub-Saharan Africa’s grasslands and woodlands. Buffalo herds are characteristic of the park’s open savanna habitats.
Guinean forest–savanna mosaic: A West African ecological transition zone combining savanna, woodland, and patches of forest. The park’s unusual range of habitats reflects its position near this transition.
Biodiversity monitoring: The repeated measurement of species, populations, or habitats to detect ecological change. Monitoring helps assess wildlife recovery and the condition of habitats across the park.
