Comorbidity

Comorbidity is the presence of one or more additional health conditions alongside a primary condition. The term can describe conditions that coexist without implying that one caused another.

Multimorbidity: The presence of multiple long-term health conditions in one person, without designating one as primary. Unlike comorbidity, it does not organize conditions around a primary diagnosis.
Charlson Comorbidity Index: A weighted score that estimates mortality risk from a patient's age and selected coexisting conditions. It converts specific comorbidities into a standardized measure for prognosis and research.
Causal inference: Methods for determining whether changes in one factor cause changes in another. Co-occurrence alone cannot show whether one condition caused another.
Multimorbidity patterns: Recurring combinations of multiple health conditions identified in populations or individuals. Pattern studies reveal clusters that a single primary diagnosis can obscure.
Disease: A harmful disruption of normal bodily or mental function, typically associated with recognizable signs or symptoms. Comorbidity describes relationships among diseases and other health conditions.
Elixhauser Comorbidity Measure: A set of comorbidity categories used to assess health burden and predict outcomes, especially in administrative data. It offers a broader condition set for adjusting analyses of hospital outcomes.
Confounding: Bias arising when a third factor influences both an exposure and an outcome. A shared cause can make two conditions appear causally linked when they are not.
Administrative data: Information collected for billing, insurance, or health-system operations rather than primarily for research. Comorbidity estimates from these records depend on coding accuracy and available diagnoses.
Diagnosis: The identification of a health condition from evidence such as symptoms, examination, and tests. A primary diagnosis provides the reference point for labeling other conditions comorbid.
Risk adjustment: A statistical process that accounts for differences in baseline risk when comparing outcomes. Accounting for comorbidity can make comparisons between patients or hospitals fairer.
