Compact of Free Association

A Compact of Free Association is an agreement between the United States and a Pacific island country that recognizes its sovereignty while establishing close ties, including U.S. defense responsibilities and financial assistance.

Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands: A United Nations trusteeship administered by the United States across Micronesia after World War II. The compact replaced U.S. trusteeship administration with self-government and new bilateral arrangements.
