Complex dynamics

Complex dynamics studies repeated application of functions on the complex plane. It examines the orbits they generate, especially the boundary between stable and unstable behavior.

Iteration: Repeated application of a function or rule to an initial value. Complex dynamics builds each orbit by applying the same function repeatedly.
Holomorphic function: A complex function that is complex differentiable throughout an open domain. The standard theory studies iterates of holomorphic maps and their rigid local behavior.
Quadratic polynomial: A polynomial of degree two, commonly written as z²+c in complex dynamics. This simple family already exhibits attracting cycles, escape, and fractal boundaries.
Arthur Cayley: A British mathematician whose work included an early study of Newton’s method for complex polynomials. His analysis anticipated the complicated basin boundaries later called Newton fractals.
Newton's method: An iterative root-finding algorithm that updates an estimate using a function and its derivative. Its complex-plane basins form a direct computational example of dynamical behavior.
Orbit (dynamics): The sequence of values produced by repeatedly applying a function to an initial point. Orbits are the basic objects whose long-term behavior complex dynamics studies.
Riemann sphere: The complex plane together with a point at infinity, represented as a sphere. Adding infinity makes polynomial and rational dynamics behave naturally at escape.
Mandelbrot set: The set of complex parameters c for which the orbit of 0 under z²+c remains bounded. It catalogs which quadratic maps have connected Julia sets.
Pierre Fatou: A French mathematician who helped establish the theory of iteration of rational functions. His work developed the analytic foundations behind stable regions of iteration.
Fractal: A geometric set with detail across scales, often described by non-integer dimension or self-similarity. Many dynamically defined boundaries exhibit fractal geometry.
