Component (mixtures)

A component is a chemically distinct constituent substance in a mixture or other multicomponent system. Its amount and interactions with other components help determine the system’s properties.

Mixture: A physical combination of substances whose constituents retain their chemical identities. A mixture is the broader system whose constituents are its components.
Composition (chemistry): The identities and relative amounts of substances in a material. Composition records which components are present and in what proportions.
Material balance: An accounting equation that tracks material entering, leaving, accumulating, and reacting in a system. Balances track each component separately through a process.
Compound (chemistry): A pure substance whose atoms of different elements are chemically bonded in fixed proportions. A compound is a single chemical substance, while a mixture component is a constituent of a physical blend.
Chemical substance: Matter with a definite chemical composition and characteristic properties. A component is treated as a substance when identifying mixture composition.
Mole fraction: The amount of one constituent divided by the total amount of all constituents in a mixture. Mole fractions quantify component proportions in mixture calculations.

Element (chemistry): A pure substance consisting of atoms with the same number of protons. An element can be a component, but components are not limited to elements.
Chemical species: A chemically distinct entity, such as an atom, molecule, ion, or radical. Species can exist within components, but component counts need not equal species counts.
Chemical potential: The change in a system’s thermodynamic potential when a component is added at fixed conditions. Differences in component chemical potential drive transfer and reaction.
