Composite video

Composite video is an analog video format that combines picture information, color information, and synchronization pulses into one signal for transmission or recording.

Luminance: Luminance is the brightness information in an image, weighted to reflect human visual sensitivity. Composite video carries the picture’s brightness as a distinct signal component.
Analog signal: An analog signal represents information through continuously varying physical quantities. Composite video encodes picture and timing as continuous voltage variations.
S-Video: S-Video is an analog video connection that carries luminance and chrominance on separate signal paths. It avoids the combining and subsequent separation of color and brightness used by composite video.
RCA connector: An RCA connector is a coaxial plug commonly used to carry analog audio or video signals. Yellow RCA plugs commonly carry composite video between consumer devices.
Chrominance: Chrominance is the color information in a video signal, commonly represented by color difference signals. Color is encoded alongside luminance within the composite waveform.
Television: Television is a system for transmitting and displaying moving images, usually with synchronized sound. Composite video is one signal format used within television systems.
Component video: Component video transmits image information through multiple separate analog signals, often dividing luminance and color differences. Its separate channels reduce the interference that can occur in a composite signal.
Video cassette recorder: A video cassette recorder records and plays video on magnetic tape housed in cassettes. Many VCRs accept and output composite video through analog connectors.
Color burst: A color burst is a short reference oscillation transmitted near each video line to synchronize color decoding. Receivers use this reference to recover the phase and timing of encoded color.
Color television: Color television is a television system that reproduces images with color as well as brightness. Composite video extends monochrome television signaling to carry color information.
