Compound microscope

An optical instrument that uses an objective lens and an eyepiece to magnify an image in stages. Its multiple lenses provide greater magnification than a single-lens microscope.

Objective lens: The lens nearest the specimen that forms the first magnified image in a microscope. It gathers light from the specimen and creates the intermediate image.
Light source: A device or material that emits light for illumination or measurement. Transmitted-light microscopes need illumination to make specimens visible.
Bright-field microscopy: A light-microscopy method that forms images from light transmitted through or reflected by a specimen against a bright background. It is the standard illumination mode for many compound microscopes.
Simple microscope: A magnifying instrument that uses a single lens or lens group to form an enlarged image. Unlike a compound microscope, it does not magnify through separate objective and eyepiece stages.
Eyepiece: The lens or lens system through which an observer views an optical instrument’s image. It magnifies the intermediate image produced by the objective.
Condenser (microscope): A microscope component that focuses illumination onto the specimen. Its focused light supports contrast and resolution in transmitted-light viewing.
Histology: The study of the microscopic structure of tissues. Compound microscopes reveal cellular organization in prepared tissue sections.
Stereo microscope: A microscope that presents slightly different views to each eye, producing a three-dimensional impression at low magnification. It favors depth perception and larger specimens over the compound microscope’s higher magnification.
Real image: An image formed where light rays actually converge, which can be projected onto a surface. The objective forms this intermediate image before the eyepiece magnifies it.
Diaphragm (optics): An adjustable opening that controls the amount or angular spread of light in an optical system. The microscope’s aperture diaphragm helps balance contrast, brightness, and resolution.
