Knowra Compressed-air energy storage Compressed-air energy storage Compressed-air energy storage stores energy by compressing air and later expanding it through equipment that produces electricity or useful work. Its efficiency and design depend on how compression heat is handled and where the air is stored.
Gas compression : The reduction of a gas’s volume, usually by applying mechanical work and raising its pressure. Compressors perform the charging step, converting electrical or mechanical input into pressurized air.
Thermodynamics : The study of heat, work, energy, and the properties of systems in equilibrium. Its laws govern compression work, heat transfer, and expansion output.
Pumped-storage hydroelectricity : A grid-storage method that pumps water uphill and later releases it through turbines. It stores energy through elevation rather than compressed air.
Huntorf Power Station : A compressed-air energy storage plant commissioned in Germany in 1978. Its salt-cavern installation became an early commercial demonstration of the technology.
Round-trip efficiency : The ratio of energy delivered by a storage system to the energy used to charge it. Heat losses, compression work, and auxiliary loads set how much electricity returns.
Isothermal process : A thermodynamic process in which a system’s temperature remains constant. Removing compression heat keeps air closer to constant temperature and can improve storage efficiency.
Ideal gas law : An equation relating the pressure, volume, temperature, and amount of an ideal gas. It links the air’s pressure and temperature to the volume required for storage.
Battery energy storage system : A system that stores electrical energy in rechargeable electrochemical cells. Batteries avoid air caverns and thermal cycles but rely on electrochemical materials.
McIntosh Power Plant : A compressed-air energy storage facility in Alabama that began operating in 1991. It stores heat from compression and reuses it to reduce fuel consumption during generation.
Adiabatic compressed-air energy storage : A compressed-air storage design that captures compression heat and reuses it during expansion. Its performance depends on storing heat effectively and returning it at the right temperature.
