Computer (electronic device)

A programmable electronic machine that processes data by executing instructions and can store, retrieve, and communicate information.

Central processing unit: The processor that fetches and executes instructions, coordinating a computer’s calculations and operations. It executes the instruction sequences that drive a computer’s work.
Transistor: A semiconductor device that controls current and can amplify signals or act as an electronic switch. Billions of transistors implement the switches and logic inside modern processors.
Abacus: A hand-operated calculating instrument that represents numbers with movable counters. It illustrates calculation before machines automated arithmetic.
Personal computer: A computer designed for use by one person, commonly as a desktop or laptop. It brought general-purpose computing into homes, schools, and workplaces.
Analog computer: A computing machine that represents quantities with continuously varying physical signals. It computes through continuous physical quantities rather than discrete digital states.
Random-access memory: Fast, temporary memory that holds data and instructions available to a processor. It keeps active programs and data close to the processor.
Logic gate: An electronic circuit that performs a Boolean operation on one or more binary inputs. Logic gates combine binary signals into arithmetic and control operations.
Charles Babbage: An English mathematician and inventor who designed the Difference Engine and Analytical Engine. His Analytical Engine anticipated a programmable, general-purpose computing machine.
Server: A computer or program that provides services or resources to other computers over a network. Servers make computing resources and information available to many connected devices.
Mechanical computer: A computing machine that performs operations through moving mechanical parts. It shows that computation predates electronic circuitry.
