Computer-supported cooperative work

Computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) studies how technology supports people working together and how collaborative technologies should be designed. It connects social analysis of work with the design and evaluation of systems.

Time–space matrix: A framework that classifies group interaction by whether participants work at the same or different times and places. It maps the settings CSCW systems support, from co-located meetings to asynchronous distributed work.
Ethnomethodology: A sociological approach that studies how people produce and recognize order in everyday activities. Its close attention to situated practice informs analyses of how work actually unfolds around technology.
Irene Greif: An American computer scientist whose research helped establish computer-supported cooperative work as a research field. Greif co-organized the 1984 workshop that helped give CSCW its name and community.
Computer-mediated communication: Communication between people mediated by digital technologies. CSCW includes the design and study of technologies that mediate group communication.
Human–computer interaction: The study and design of interactions between people and computer systems. HCI is a broader field; CSCW gives particular attention to interaction among people through technology.
Awareness (computer-supported cooperative work): Knowledge of others’ activities, availability, and presence that helps people coordinate shared work. CSCW investigates how interfaces make collaborators’ actions visible without disrupting their work.
Workplace studies: Research examining work as it is performed in real organizational settings. Field studies reveal coordination practices that system designers may otherwise overlook.
Paul M. Cashman: A computer scientist associated with early research and development in collaborative computing. Cashman co-organized the 1984 CSCW workshop with Irene Greif.
Collaborative software: Software that enables multiple people to communicate or work together on shared tasks or materials. It applies CSCW findings to practical tools for group work.
Computer-supported collaborative learning: Research on technology supporting collaborative learning among students or other learners. CSCL is a closely related area focused specifically on learning through collaboration.
