Comstock laws

The Comstock laws were United States statutes beginning in 1873 that restricted mailing materials deemed obscene, including information about contraception and abortion.

New York Society for the Suppression of Vice: A private organization founded in 1873 to suppress literature and practices its members considered immoral. The society gave Comstock’s anti-vice campaign an institutional base for promoting and enforcing restrictions.
Margaret Sanger: An American birth-control activist who founded the organizations that became Planned Parenthood. Federal and state Comstock restrictions repeatedly obstructed her efforts to distribute contraceptive information.
