Knowra Concentration camp Concentration camp A camp where authorities detain groups of people, often without ordinary criminal trials, based on identity or political status. Conditions and purposes vary, and the term does not by itself mean an extermination camp.
Internment : The confinement of people, especially during war, without ordinary criminal conviction. Concentration camps use internment to confine populations outside ordinary criminal proceedings.
Reconcentration camps : Camps used to relocate and confine civilian populations during conflicts, especially in Cuba and the Second Boer War. The term’s early history is tied to colonial counterinsurgency and civilian relocation.
Prisoner-of-war camp : A facility for detaining members of an opposing armed force captured during war. Its formal basis is combatant status under the laws of war, unlike identity-based civilian detention.
Genocide : The intentional destruction, in whole or in part, of a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Some camp systems have enabled genocide, though concentration camps do not always serve that purpose.
Deportation : The forced removal of people from a territory by state authorities. Authorities have used deportation to fill camps and separate detainees from their homes.
Second Boer War : A war fought in southern Africa from 1899 to 1902 between the British Empire and Boer republics. British camps for Boer and African civilians became an influential early example.
Refugee camp : A temporary settlement providing shelter and services to people displaced across borders. Refugee camps are intended for protection and assistance, not punitive state confinement.
Crimes against humanity : Certain widespread or systematic attacks against civilian populations, defined as crimes under international law. Mass detention and persecution in camps can form part of such attacks.
Forced labor : Work exacted from people under threat, coercion, or penalty. Many camps compelled detainees to work under coercive and dangerous conditions.
Cuban War of Independence : The 1895–1898 Cuban struggle against Spanish colonial rule, ending with U.S. intervention and Spanish defeat. Spanish reconcentration policies in Cuba helped shape the early use of the camp concept.
