Concertación

Concertación was a Chilean center-left coalition that governed from 1990 to 2010, guiding the country’s transition from military rule while retaining a market-oriented economy.

Patricio Aylwin: Chilean Christian Democratic politician who served as president from 1990 to 1994. He led Concertación’s first government and negotiated the early transition’s constraints.
Party for Democracy: A Chilean center-left political party founded in 1987 to oppose the continuation of military rule. It was one of Concertación’s principal constituent parties and supplied several national leaders.
1988 Chilean national plebiscite: A referendum in which Chilean voters rejected extending Augusto Pinochet’s rule for another eight years. Concertación’s predecessor alliance campaigned for No and won the vote that opened the path to elections.

Chile Vamos: A Chilean center-right political coalition founded in 2015. It represents a later electoral rival to the center-left tradition Concertación organized.
National Commission for Truth and Reconciliation: A Chilean commission established in 1990 to investigate human-rights violations resulting in death or disappearance under military rule. Its Rettig Report became a landmark of Concertación’s early response to dictatorship-era abuses.
Socialist Party of Chile: A Chilean political party founded in 1933 and associated with democratic socialism. It became a major coalition partner and provided presidents Ricardo Lagos and Michelle Bachelet.
