Condottiero

A professional military commander who led hired troops in Renaissance Italy, usually under a contract with a city-state, prince, or other employer.

Condotta: A written contract specifying a military company's service, pay, duration, and obligations. The condotta defined the terms under which a commander and his troops served an employer.
