Cone

A cone is a three-dimensional solid with a circular base that narrows to an apex, or the surface traced by its sides. Its sections and dimensions are described by geometry.

Circle: A plane curve whose points are all the same distance from a fixed center. The cone’s base is circular, and its radius determines the base’s size.
Volume: The amount of three-dimensional space enclosed by a solid. A cone occupies one-third the volume of a cylinder with the same base and height.
Frustum: The portion of a cone remaining after its tip is cut off by a plane parallel to its base. Truncated cones model vessels and machine parts with circular ends of different sizes.
Cylinder: A solid with two parallel congruent bases connected by a curved lateral surface. Unlike a cone, a cylinder keeps the same cross-sectional size along its axis.
Radius: A line segment from the center of a circle or sphere to its boundary. The base radius helps determine the cone’s volume and slant height.
Lateral surface area: The area of a solid’s side surface, excluding its base or bases. For a right circular cone, it equals π times the base radius times the slant height.
Conical pendulum: A pendulum whose bob moves in a horizontal circle while its string traces a cone. Its motion links conical geometry to circular dynamics.
Pyramid: A polyhedron with a polygonal base and triangular faces meeting at an apex. A pyramid shares the tapering form but has a polygonal rather than circular base.
Apex: The pointed end or highest vertex of a geometric solid. A cone’s circular base narrows toward this defining point.
Conic section: A curve formed by intersecting a plane with a double cone. The cone’s surface produces the family of curves named for this construction.
