Congo Crisis

The Congo Crisis was a political and military conflict in the Republic of the Congo from 1960 to 1965, following independence from Belgium. It involved regional secessions, mutinies, foreign intervention, and repeated struggles over national power.

Force Publique mutiny: The July 1960 revolt by Congolese soldiers against their Belgian-led military hierarchy. The mutiny undermined the new government’s authority days after independence.
Belgian Congo: The Belgian colony in Central Africa that became the Republic of the Congo in 1960. Its abrupt end left the successor state with fragile institutions and few experienced Congolese officials.
Patrice Lumumba: The Congo’s first prime minister, in office from June to September 1960, and a leading nationalist figure. His confrontation with secessionists and foreign powers made him central to the crisis.
Congo Civil War: A broader name sometimes used for the Congolese conflict and instability of 1960–1965. The crisis’s overlapping armed conflicts are often grouped under this wider label.
Katanga secession: The 1960–1963 attempt by Katanga to separate from the Republic of the Congo. Katanga’s secession became the crisis’s central territorial conflict.
Congo independence: The Congo’s transition from Belgian colonial rule to independence on 30 June 1960. The crisis began within days of the transfer of sovereignty.
Joseph Kasa-Vubu: The Congo’s first president, who served from 1960 until Mobutu removed him in 1965. His dismissal of Lumumba triggered a constitutional struggle at the crisis’s outset.
Assassination of Patrice Lumumba: The killing of former Congolese prime minister Patrice Lumumba and two associates in Katanga on 17 January 1961. Lumumba’s death became the crisis’s most consequential political killing and an international scandal.
South Kasai secession: A 1960–1962 separatist movement that declared South Kasai independent from the Congo. Its breakaway state added another front to the central government’s struggle.
Congolese National Movement: A Congolese nationalist political party led by Patrice Lumumba and associated with a unified independent Congo. Its national-unity program shaped Lumumba’s response to secession and foreign intervention.
