Congo Free State

A Central African state under the personal rule of Belgium’s King Leopold II, internationally recognized from 1885 until Belgium annexed it in 1908.

Concession system in the Congo Free State: An arrangement granting private companies rights to exploit land and resources in the Congo Free State. Concessions turned rubber and ivory extraction into a source of revenue for Leopold’s regime.
Berlin Conference: An 1884–1885 conference at which European powers negotiated rules and claims concerning Africa. Its agreements provided the diplomatic framework for recognizing Leopold’s Congo claim.
