Congo River

The Congo River is a major Central African river that drains a vast equatorial basin and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. It is the world’s deepest known river and carries more water than any river except the Amazon.

Congo Basin: The vast drainage region whose waters flow into the Congo River and its tributaries. Its area supplies the river’s enormous flow across equatorial Central Africa.
Inga Dams: A pair of hydropower dams on the Congo River near the Inga Falls in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They exploit the river’s steep lower-course flow to generate electricity.
Henry Morton Stanley: A Welsh-American journalist and explorer known for expeditions in Central Africa during the nineteenth century. His 1870s expedition followed much of the river to the Atlantic and publicized its course.

Congo River biodiversity: The variety of aquatic and river-dependent life found in the Congo River system. Its varied habitats and isolation support many species, including endemic fishes.
Ubangi River: A major northern tributary of the Congo River, forming part of the Central African Republic–Democratic Republic of the Congo border. Its waters join the Congo near Mbandaka and contribute substantially to its flow.
