Conifer

A conifer is a cone-bearing gymnosperm, usually an evergreen tree or shrub. Its seeds develop exposed on cone scales rather than enclosed within fruits.

Gymnosperm: A seed-producing plant whose ovules are not enclosed in an ovary. Conifers are one major lineage within this group of seed plants.
Wind pollination: The transfer of pollen between plants by air currents. Most conifers rely on wind to carry pollen from pollen cones to ovules.
Forestry: The science and practice of managing forests and their resources. Conifer forests are major targets of timber management and conservation.
Pine: A conifer in the genus Pinus, typically bearing needle leaves in bundles. Pines are a diverse and widely recognized group of conifers.
Boreal forest: A northern forest biome dominated by cold-adapted trees, especially conifers. Conifers form much of the canopy across the vast northern boreal zone.
Conifer cone: A reproductive structure made of scales that bear pollen or exposed ovules. Its scales carry the reproductive structures that give conifers their name.
Pollination: The transfer of pollen to the part of a plant where fertilization can follow. Conifer pollination transfers pollen to exposed ovules on seed cones.
Timber: Wood harvested and prepared for construction or other products. Many conifer species supply softwood timber for buildings and manufacturing.
Fir: A conifer in the genus Abies, usually with upright cones that disintegrate on the tree. Firs are common conifers with distinctive cones and flattened needles.
Taiga: The subarctic belt of coniferous forest spanning northern Eurasia and North America. This biome is named for the extensive conifer forests that define it.
