Constantine the Great

Roman emperor from 306 to 337, Constantine reunified the empire, supported Christianity, and established Constantinople as a new imperial capital.

Edict of Milan: A 313 agreement by Constantine and Licinius that ended state persecution of Christians and restored confiscated property. It gave legal protection to Christianity during Constantine’s reign.
Battle of the Milvian Bridge: A 312 battle near Rome in which Constantine defeated Maxentius and gained control of the western empire. The victory secured his western rule and preceded his support for Christianity.
