Constantine VIII

Constantine VIII was Byzantine emperor from 1025 to 1028, after decades as co-emperor with his brother Basil II. His short sole reign ended the Macedonian dynasty’s male line.

Macedonian dynasty: The Macedonian dynasty was a Byzantine imperial house that ruled from 867 to 1056. Constantine’s reign was the dynasty’s final male succession.

Theophano: Theophano was a Byzantine empress who married Romanos II and later Nikephoros II Phokas. As their mother, she was central to the brothers’ early succession and guardianship.
John the Eunuch: John the Eunuch, also called John the Orphanotrophos, was a powerful Byzantine court official under Michael IV. His later influence illustrates how court ministers gained power in the succession Constantine left behind.
