Constantinian shift

The transformation of Christianity from a persecuted minority religion into an imperial favorite and, under later emperors, the empire’s dominant religion. It began under Constantine in the early fourth century and continued after his death.

Edict of Milan: A 313 agreement between Constantine and Licinius that established religious toleration and ordered the return of confiscated Christian property. It ended official persecution and gave the shift its first major legal foundation.
Diocletianic Persecution: The empire-wide persecution of Christians launched under Diocletian in 303. The abrupt move from persecution to imperial favor frames the shift’s scale.
Eusebius of Caesarea: A Christian bishop and historian whose writings presented Constantine as a divinely favored ruler. His account shaped later interpretations of Constantine’s conversion and Christian rule.
Christianization of the Roman Empire: The gradual spread of Christian institutions, practices, and influence across Roman society and government. It names the broad social transformation that the Constantinian shift initiated but did not complete.
Edict of Thessalonica: A 380 decree by Theodosius I, Gratian, and Valentinian II that endorsed Nicene Christianity as imperial orthodoxy. Unlike Constantine’s toleration, it explicitly privileged one Christian confession.
Constantine the Great: Roman emperor from 306 to 337 who favored Christianity and reshaped its relationship with imperial power. His policies, patronage, and interventions in church disputes drove the shift’s early phase.
Battle of the Milvian Bridge: A 312 battle in which Constantine defeated Maxentius near Rome and secured control of the western empire. Constantine’s victory preceded his pro-Christian policies and became associated with his conversion.
Licinius: Roman emperor who ruled the eastern empire alongside Constantine and later fought him for sole power. His alliance with Constantine produced the 313 religious settlement before their rivalry resumed.
Arian controversy: A fourth-century dispute over the relationship between the Father and the Son in Christian theology. Imperial involvement in doctrine turned theological disagreement into a matter of public order.
Religious toleration: The allowance of religious beliefs or practices that differ from those favored by a governing authority. Constantine’s early policies are better distinguished from the later enforcement of Christian orthodoxy.
