Constituent Assembly of India

The representative body that debated and adopted India’s Constitution between 1946 and 1949. It also served as India’s provisional legislature after independence.

Constitution of India: India’s supreme legal framework, adopted in 1949 and in force since 1950. The Assembly’s debates and decisions produced this governing document.
Cabinet Mission Plan: A 1946 British proposal for a united India, provincial groupings, and a constitution-making assembly. Its provisions set the initial framework for convening the Assembly.
Jawaharlal Nehru: Indian independence leader and the country’s first prime minister. He moved the Objectives Resolution that outlined the Assembly’s constitutional aims.

Preamble to the Constitution of India: The Constitution’s opening statement of India’s constitutional commitments and aims. Its language carries forward principles first expressed in the Objectives Resolution.
Universal suffrage: The right of all adult citizens to vote, subject to limited lawful qualifications. The Constitution established adult suffrage for elections in a society with widespread poverty and illiteracy.
