Constructed language

A constructed language is deliberately designed, with its grammar and vocabulary planned rather than arising through ordinary community use. Its purposes range from artistic expression to international communication and logical experimentation.

Phonology: The system of speech sounds in a language and the rules governing their patterns. Designers choose which sounds a language allows and how they combine.
Auxiliary language: A language designed to facilitate communication among people who speak different native languages. International communication is one of the major goals behind constructed languages.
John Wilkins: A seventeenth-century English scholar who proposed a universal language organized by a system of concepts. His philosophical language is an early influential attempt at systematic language design.
Natural language: A language that develops and changes through use within a speech community rather than through a single deliberate design. It contrasts with the planned origins that define constructed languages.
Morphology: The study of how words are formed from smaller meaningful units. Its rules determine how a constructed language builds words and marks grammatical distinctions.
Artlang: A constructed language created primarily for artistic expression or fictional worldbuilding. Some languages are designed as works of art rather than practical tools.
Volapük: An international auxiliary language published by Johann Martin Schleyer in 1879. Its rapid early growth preceded Esperanto's rise in the planned-language movement.
International auxiliary language: A language intended as a shared means of communication among speakers of different native languages. Unlike constructed languages broadly, this category is defined by a practical international purpose.
Syntax: The rules governing how words combine into phrases and sentences. A designed grammar must specify how speakers can arrange words.
Logical language: A language designed to make logical structure or meaning explicit and unambiguous. Logical experimentation motivates a distinct family of language designs.
