Contact fuze

A fuze that initiates a munition’s explosive charge when it physically strikes or touches a target.

Percussion cap: A small impact-sensitive primer that ignites when struck by a firing pin or similar force. Impact-sensitive primers can begin the ignition chain inside a contact fuze.
Artillery fuze: A fuze designed to control the functioning of an artillery projectile. Artillery projectiles commonly use contact initiation for impact effects.
Time fuze: A fuze that initiates a munition after a preset interval or at a specified time. It initiates by elapsed time rather than physical contact.
Unexploded ordnance: Explosive weapons that failed to detonate but remain capable of exploding later. A contact fuze that fails on impact can leave hazardous unexploded ordnance.
Firing pin: A pointed or blunt striker that hits a primer to initiate an explosive or propellant reaction. Some impact fuzes use a moving striker to hit the primer on contact.
Grenade fuze: A fuze that controls the initiation of a hand grenade’s explosive charge. Some grenades use impact-sensitive fuzes to function on striking a target.
Proximity fuze: A fuze that initiates a munition when it detects a nearby target or surface. It can function without the munition touching its target.
Insensitive munitions: Munitions designed to reduce the chance of accidental initiation under abnormal conditions. Safety design must prevent unintended fuze initiation during storage, transport, or handling.
Detonator: A device that initiates detonation in a high explosive through a smaller explosive charge. The fuze’s trigger must ultimately initiate the munition’s main explosive charge.
Anti-tank mine: A land mine designed to damage or destroy armored vehicles, usually through pressure activation. Its pressure trigger illustrates contact activation by a vehicle rather than a projectile impact.
