Containerization

Containerization is the use of standardized freight containers that transfer between ships, trains, and trucks without unloading their contents. It enables intermodal transport across global supply chains.

Intermodal freight transport: The movement of freight in one loading unit across multiple transport modes without handling the goods themselves. Containerization is the dominant system for transferring cargo between ships, trains, and trucks.
Malcom McLean: An American trucking entrepreneur whose container system helped establish modern intermodal shipping. McLean developed and promoted the commercial system that made container shipping practical at scale.
Port of Newark–Elizabeth: A major New Jersey port complex that became an early center of container shipping. Its terminals anchored the first large-scale container operations in the New York region.
Refrigerated container: An insulated freight container with powered temperature control for transporting perishable or temperature-sensitive goods. Refrigerated containers extend intermodal shipping to food, medicines, and other temperature-sensitive cargo.
Port congestion: The accumulation of vessels, cargo, or vehicles that delays operations at a port. Large container flows can overwhelm terminal capacity and disrupt connected transport networks.
ISO container: A freight container built to standardized dimensions and specifications set by the International Organization for Standardization. Shared specifications let containers fit ships, railcars, trucks, and handling equipment worldwide.
Ideal X: A converted tanker that carried 58 truck trailers' detachable bodies from Newark to Houston in 1956. Its voyage demonstrated McLean's approach to moving containers by sea.
Port of Oakland: A California seaport that became a pioneering container port on the Pacific coast. Oakland's early adoption helped establish container shipping across the Pacific.
Double-stack rail transport: A rail freight system that carries one intermodal container on top of another on specially designed railcars. Stacking containers increases the capacity of rail corridors that connect ports with inland markets.
Container ship emissions: Air pollutants and greenhouse gases released by vessels transporting freight containers. The scale of container shipping makes its fuel use and emissions a major decarbonization challenge.
