Contemporary ballet

Contemporary ballet combines classical ballet technique with contemporary movement, choreography, and music. It retains ballet’s technical vocabulary while allowing greater freedom in movement, structure, and expression.

Modern dance: A broad dance tradition that developed partly in opposition to classical ballet’s conventions. Its grounded movement and expressive freedom helped expand ballet choreography.
Choreography: The composition and arrangement of movement for a dance performance. Contemporary ballet’s identity emerges from how choreographers arrange ballet and contemporary movement.
Neoclassical ballet: A twentieth-century ballet style that retains classical technique while using simpler staging and less traditional choreography. It established a major precedent for ballet that altered classical conventions without abandoning technique.
Nederlands Dans Theater: A Dutch dance company founded in 1959, known for contemporary choreography and an international repertory. Its repertory has been a prominent platform for choreographers working between ballet and contemporary dance.
Contemporary dance: A broad dance practice drawing on modern dance, ballet, improvisation, and other movement forms. Unlike contemporary ballet, it need not retain ballet technique as its central foundation.
Pointe technique: A ballet technique in which dancers support their weight on the tips of their toes in pointe shoes. Some contemporary ballet retains pointe work while placing it in less traditional choreography.
Dance partnering: The techniques and compositional practices dancers use to move together or support one another. Contemporary partnering can depart from classical lifts and gendered roles.
George Balanchine: A Russian-American choreographer who shaped neoclassical ballet and co-founded New York City Ballet. His stripped-down, musically driven choreography helped loosen ballet’s inherited forms.
Royal Ballet: A British ballet company based at the Royal Opera House in London. Its repertory includes contemporary works alongside classical ballet.
Postmodern dance: A dance movement that questioned theatrical conventions and expanded what could count as dance. Its rejection of virtuosity and inherited forms contrasts with contemporary ballet’s continued use of ballet technique.
