Continental rise

The continental rise is a gently sloping seabed zone of sediment accumulation between the continental slope and the abyssal plain. It forms chiefly where sediment-laden flows spread and deposit material at the base of the slope.

Turbidity current: A dense, sediment-laden flow that moves downslope through water under gravity. These flows carry much of the sediment deposited at the foot of continental slopes.
Continental margin: The submerged edge of a continent, including its shelf, slope, and rise or trench. The continental rise is a distinct outer zone of this larger land-to-ocean transition.
Atlantic-type continental margin: A passive continental margin formed where a continent meets oceanic crust without an active plate boundary. Sediment commonly builds a broad rise along this kind of margin.
Subduction trench: A long, narrow seafloor depression formed where one tectonic plate bends beneath another. A trench occupies the margin where a broad sedimentary rise is commonly absent.
Submarine fan: A fan-shaped accumulation of sediment on the deep seafloor, built by sediment-gravity flows. Repeated turbidity currents build fan deposits across many continental rises.
Continental shelf: The shallow, gently sloping submerged edge of a continent, extending from shore to the shelf break. It lies landward of the slope and supplies sediment that can reach the rise.
Pacific-type continental margin: An active continental margin where oceanic crust commonly descends beneath a continent at a convergent boundary. Subduction trenches often replace the broad rise found on passive margins.
Continental shelf break: The transition where the gently sloping continental shelf steepens into the continental slope. It marks the upper edge of the margin sequence, far landward of the rise.
Debris flow: A gravity-driven movement of a concentrated mixture of sediment and water. Debris flows deliver coarse sediment from steep slopes to the rise.
Continental slope: The relatively steep seabed descent from the continental shelf toward the deep ocean floor. The rise begins at the base of this steep descent.
