Continuous distillation

Continuous distillation separates a flowing feed into products that leave while the equipment operates steadily. It maintains ongoing material and energy flows rather than processing one batch at a time.

Distillation column: A vertical vessel that separates a mixture through repeated vapor–liquid contact. Its internal stages or packing provide the repeated contacts needed for continuous separation.
Vapor–liquid equilibrium: The condition in which vapor and liquid phases coexist with compositions governed by thermodynamic equilibrium. It determines how each stage redistributes components between rising vapor and descending liquid.
Fractional distillation: A distillation process that separates a mixture through repeated vaporization and condensation. Continuous distillation is a steady-flow operating mode for this broader separation method.
Batch distillation: A distillation process in which a fixed charge is separated in a vessel over time. It handles a finite charge, unlike continuous distillation’s ongoing feed and product flows.
Reboiler: A heat exchanger that vaporizes part of a liquid stream, often using steam or another heating medium. It supplies vapor to the column from the continuously withdrawn bottom liquid.
Relative volatility: A measure of how readily one component vaporizes compared with another in a mixture. Greater relative volatility generally makes the continuous separation require fewer stages or less energy.
Crude oil refining: The processing of petroleum into fuels, gases, and other useful products. Refineries continuously fractionate crude oil into streams with different boiling ranges.
Flash distillation: A separation in which a feed is partially vaporized and divided into vapor and liquid phases in one equilibrium step. It uses a single principal vaporization step rather than sustained staged contact.
Condenser: A heat exchanger that removes heat from vapor, turning some or all of it into liquid. It condenses overhead vapor into product and reflux.
Raoult's law: An ideal-solution relation linking a liquid component’s mole fraction to its partial vapor pressure. It offers a simple way to estimate vapor–liquid compositions for suitable mixtures.
