Contra War

The Contra War was the 1980s armed conflict between Nicaragua’s Sandinista government and U.S.-backed Contra forces, shaped by revolution, foreign intervention, and Cold War rivalry.

Contras: Nicaraguan armed groups that fought the Sandinista government after the 1979 revolution. These insurgents formed the principal armed opposition to the Sandinista government.
Somoza family: The Nicaraguan dynasty that ruled the country from 1936 until the 1979 revolution. The dynasty’s overthrow brought the Sandinistas to power and left former regime supporters among the opposition.
Daniel Ortega: A Sandinista leader who served as Nicaragua’s president from 1985 to 1990 and again from 2007 onward. As president during the war’s final years, he led the government confronting the Contra insurgency.
Iran–Contra affair: A U.S. political scandal involving secret arms sales to Iran and diversion of proceeds to Contra forces. The affair exposed covert efforts to sustain Contra support despite congressional restrictions.
Salvadoran Civil War: The 1979–1992 armed conflict between El Salvador’s government and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front. Like the Contra War, it drew U.S. involvement, but its combatants and national setting differed.
Sandinista National Liberation Front: The revolutionary movement that overthrew Nicaragua’s Somoza dictatorship and governed the country from 1979. Its government was the Contras’ principal adversary throughout the war.
Anastasio Somoza Debayle: Nicaragua’s ruler from 1967 until the Sandinista revolution forced him into exile in 1979. His dictatorship’s collapse created the political rupture from which the Contra War emerged.
Violeta Barrios de Chamorro: Nicaraguan journalist and politician who became president after defeating Daniel Ortega in the 1990 election. Her victory enabled a peaceful transfer of power and accompanied the Contras’ demobilization.
Boland Amendment: A series of U.S. laws restricting government assistance to Contra forces in Nicaragua during the 1980s. Its limits became central to the dispute over covert aid to the insurgency.
Bay of Pigs Invasion: The failed 1961 invasion of Cuba by Cuban exiles trained and supported by the United States. It offers an earlier case of U.S.-backed anti-communist forces facing a revolutionary government.
